The New Yorkers got a glimpse of all new future style car, Volkswagen XL1 as part of its one-month American Tour in which the car visited different cities including Los Angeles, Washington D.C and now it surprised the car enthusiasts of the Big Apple. The XL1 is looking like a driving machine from a Science fiction movie. This is the most fuel efficient car of the world which is combined with European combined fuel efficiency and CO2 emission that is 261 mpg and 21g/km respectively. The car is also paired with a Plug-in hybrid system that can push the car up to 31 miles without any CO2 emission. The two seater XL1 weighs only 1753 pounds with 0.189 coefficient of drag.
Under the hood of the XL1 is a 48-horsepower two-cylinder turbocharged and direct-injection TDI® Clean Diesel engine paired with a 27 horsepower electric motor fed by 5.5 kWh lithium ion battery. The power plant is mated with a seven-speed DSG dual-clutch automatic transmission. The 261 mpg is a record which is showing the high end technical and innovative skills of Volkswagen. Volkswagen commented that for the achievement of such record fuel efficiency its high skilled engineers married a diesel electric plug-in hybrid powertrain with a carbon fiber structure to ensure lightness. The top speed of the car is up to 99 mph with acceleration from 0-62 mph in 12.7 seconds. Volkswagen will produce a limited number of 251 of the futuristic XL1 at the Volkswagen factory Osnabruck, Germany. The car will get a price tag of $145,000 which is quiet reasonable for a car with such a unique array of features.
Despite the class leading fuel efficiency and unique design, the XL1 has a really comfortable and specious interior that can even deliver comparatively more everyday utility and ride quality to its previous two prototypes.
